Becoming a Midwife, by Alinta
Choose a job you will LOVE and you will never have to work a day in your life… (Confucius)
If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me “oh, I’d love to be a midwifeâ€. I’d be a millionaire!
I was lucky, for me it all fell into my lap. I looked at it all as a slap in the face of what I was born to be. Being a midwife is exactly that. You really need to be born to be a midwife. It is not something you can learn to love. However to be good at it you really need to love it!
I completed my Masters in midwifery in 2009 and was a registered nurse before that, so it was only a one year course for me. There is now the new direct entry midwifery degree, this allows anyone who is eligible to attend university the option to study only midwifery and not complete the nursing degree first. It is a 3 year degree and at the end of it you finish with a Bachelor in Midwifery. This gives you the opportunity to practice as a registered midwife in Australia.
Being a midwife is incredible! If this is something you have been thinking about, then you should definitely look into it! As the quote above mentions, if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life because you will look forward to doing what you love day in and day out.
As a midwife you get to experience the greatest moment in any family’s life everyday of yours, welcoming a new life into the world. Being with a family as they venture through their pregnancy is just as exciting as going through it with your friends. You develop relationships and bonds that make the birth an experience you will never forget. Helping the families learn how to look after and nurture their new baby is very fulfilling. Watching them leave the hospital/birth centre empowered and confident to start their new life with their baby is priceless and a proud moment for a midwife!
